One shelter in Serbia found themselves in the right place at the right time to save a needy kitten.
Volunteers for the Dog Rescue Shelter Mladenovac were on their way into the shelter one morning when they came across a lonely little kitten trying to cross the street.
Even though their organization primarily works with dogs, they are more than happy to help whenever an animal is in need. And this little kitten was!
Wandering in an intersection, the black and white fur-baby paced back and forth. Although it is not a busy location, it is certainly not a safe place for any animals.
As they approached the kitten, he thankfully didn’t run off to avoid his rescuers.
Getting closer, they noticed his right eye was infected and perhaps the kitten’s vision was impaired.
He allowed them to near him, only flitting off a few feet away.
One man cautiously and slowly crouched closer and surprisingly, was able to simply reach out and grab the little boy.
The poor kitten was clearly very hungry and even began “testing” their fingers for a tasty treat.
He happily accepted their kitten formula eventually and was given medication for his eye.
They do have some other cats at the shelter, but this 4-week-old boy was too young to be placed into the population there. So they have set up a foster family to care for him until he can be adopted out.
A video of the entire rescue and little sweetie, now named Fabio, is being shared in the hopes to help him find his fur-ever family.
And the results are in! Congratulations to the new Mayor of Omena, Michigan….Sweet Tart McKee the cat! Wait, what?
Yes, you read that right. The village of Omena has elected the gorgeous 9-year-old feline Sweet Tart as their “offurcial mayor” for a 3-year term. After serving on the Omena Village Council from 2012-2015 and as the Omena Vice Mayor from 2015-2018, she has more experience than most elected candidates.
The small town of 280 residents has awarded this honor to a local animal for over a decade and Sweet Tart will be the 4th elected official. Reigning Mayor of Omena, Madame Polly Loveless has held the office since her win in 2015 with grace and dignity…all balanced on 3 legs. Her slogan of “Don’t Stop Retrieving” couldn’t be toppled!
Resident polls and online votes were calculated as a fundraising event, with the $1 per vote proceeds going to the Omena Historical Society’s endowment fund. This year’s election brought in over 7,000 votes!
The village was founded in 1852 when a reverend brought a band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians from Old Mission and settled in what is now Omena. It is said that the name “omena” was an Ojibwe expression that meant “is that so?” or “is that really true?”
We think that purrfectly fits with their governing elections!
This year wasn’t an easy race for Sweet Tart though, and she ran against some very “ruff” canine opponents and some other surprising candidates! In all there were 13 dogs, a goat, a chicken, a peacock and one other cat; all later receiving a position on the village council.
Mayor Sweet Tart will have a dedicated staff to support her time in pawffice.
With their honesty throughout the campaign and election promises, we can only imagine this was not an easy decision for voters!
First Vice Mayor: Diablo Shapiro the Dog
“Convicted??? As a male, there have been accusations of sexual harassment about me, but sniffing is just how I say hello!”
Second Vice Mayor: Punkin Anderson-Harder the Dog
“I’m the best kisser ever! I can take your breath away cause I kiss so fast, and sometimes my tongue goes up your nose”.
Press Secretary: Harley Jones the Goat
“Naughtiest Deed? I fathered four kids this year to two different ladies…I couldn’t help Myself.”
Special Assistant for Fowl Issues: Penny Labriola the Chicken
“I vow to unearth all the worms, crack all the corn, and cross all the roads. I consider it a nest-essity to use my natural talent and, if elected, will continue to poop breakfast for the great people of greater Omena. Thanks- om-e-lette you cast your vote now. Cluck Cluck Cluck”
Some honorable mentions should however also be noted.
Dog Bailey Adelson’s bold campaign slogan claimed, “No one will want to “flea” Omena with me as Mayor.”
Local hero and skunk eradicator, Schatzi Putam Bradley used his past heroism in his race for mayor. “When I am Mayor, I promise to scare away skunks and porcupines. As documented in the Omena News column, I am not afraid to chase them away. I promise to “take it in the face”” for Omena”!
Canine Riley Miller digs right in with his motto, ““No poop left behind” I will make it my mission to keep Omena beautiful and clean!”
After the close race, the candidates pawticipated in an inauguration ceremony and mayoral parade. Announcing the winners at the close of the festivities, town folk got a chance to congratulate the newly elected officials. Sweet Tart’s human “servants” and campaign managers, Harold and Kanda McKee, were overjoyed when the results were announced.
Thankfully pawprints can be used for signing legal documents and are recognized as binding in this unique town. Scheduling council meetings around a cats napping schedule though may be a bit more challenging!
Last weekend, 80 animals at a shelter in Hillsborough County, FL were put in a dangerous situation when the power was cut off by burglars.
Thieves broke into the facility sometime after 9:00 pm Saturday night, stealing thousands of dollars of equipment and thoughtlessly put the animals lives at risk.
Upon arriving at the Raining Cats and Dogs Shelter and Sanctuary on Sunday, July 15th, owner Laura Santo found the garage door had been kicked in and called the police. Thankfully the thieves hadn’t been able to enter the main part of the shelter where the animals were held and none were hurt.
But what shelter owners are even more upset about is that the criminals stole 2 window unit air conditioners and parts from the electrical box at the location. This left the poor animals with no A/C in the Florida summer heat, which can still reach into the mid 80’s overnight. Without the power, they weren’t even able to set up fans for the cats and dogs to cool them down when the blazing sun rose.
A few cats had escaped from the open windows where the A/C units had been stolen from, but were found and are safely back with the shelter caretakers.
To stay hidden in the nighttime hours, the criminals had tinkered with the motion detector lights so they wouldn’t illuminate their wrong-doings.
They made off with expensive lawn equiment, including mowers, drills and saws. Damage to the garage door left them unable to open it fully. Earning themselves a nomination for “America’s dumbest criminals”, Laura later found this in the garage and shared the find with the shelters Facebook page.
“Check this out – I just found a laundry basket in the garage pre-loaded with cleaners, the extra coffee maker and the ant spray! They must have forgotten this! Who takes cleaning supplies and raid!!!”
Because these items may in fact have fingerprints all over them, the police later picked up the basket as evidence.
Just opening the shelter last year, Santo had put all the money she inherited when her father passed away into the venture.
Every penny counts when you run a non-profit organization, making this violation even more personal.
The shelter had saved and that week, had been able to purchase a kennel for $300.00. This was to allow Freddie, a rescue dog that was to be euthanized JUST because of his breed (ugh, horrible)…a place to run around safely outdoors. The thieves stole this right from the box! And no, not the whole box, they removed it from the packaging, likely thinking it could be passed off as “used” and sold.
Fortunately, TECO (Tampa Electric Company), was able to restore the power only a few hours after the situation was discovered.
The community rallied around the small shelter, overwhelming Santo and the volunteers with their outpouring of support.
“Huge THANK YOU to Mario Pineda, Field Sales Manager for “greenworks” (aka the BEST battery powered lawn equipment we have ever used!) for donating NEW lawn equipment to replace the items that were stolen. AND, he also donated a leaf blower! Why do we love this push mower so much? It is so quiet and does not disturb the dogs at all when mowing around the outside kennel.”
Then on Wednesday another overwhelming donation was received generating tears of joy from the grateful Raining Cats and Dogs team.
Heiress to the Wrigley Spearmint Gum fortune, Helen Rich, heard about the break-in. Rich lives in nearby Odessa and founded “On The Wings of Angels”, a non-profit, no kill shelter, rescuing as many animals as she can. When she learned that Laura had started the rescue with her inheritance money, she wanted to help using her own fortune.
On The Wings of Angles graciously donated a new lawn mower, air conditioner, insulation and a security system with lights. Sharing in the joy, these items were gifted on live TV, allowing the gratitude for both shelter organizations to spread through the airwaves.
But even better! Workers and installers were onsite to help do yard work and set up the A/C unit and security system!
It’s truly a wonderful and inspiring thing to watch neighbors helping neighbors and strangers extending a supportive hand when tragedy strikes.

Just a relaxing evening for a mom and her young pup turned into something much more!
At a Forest Service office in northern India, a commotion caught the attention of the officer on duty. Venturing outside to investigate, he found the canine doting on her puppy who was nursing a few cuts and scrapes.
Not seeing anything amiss in the surrounding dense forest, he curiously viewed the security tapes to see what had actually happened.
He was utterly shocked at what he found!
A leopard had quietly approached the playing pup and pounced on the innocent dog thinking it would be an easy snack. Not so.
Momma dog leapt into action, attacking the ferocious big cat without a second thought! Likely more surprised than threatened, the leopard took off retreating back into the night.
With more than 55 thousand kilometers of forest in the Himachal Pradesh, the state has a great respect for the wildlife living here. The endangered snow leopard is actually the official state animal of Himachal. The government of Himachal has also declared 2 National Parks, 30 Wildlife Sanctuaries and 3 Conservation Reserves within the forests to protect and conserve the animals living within the region.
But this night, I can’t imagine anyone rooting for the big cat in this scenario!
The YouTube video is highlighted with a quote that couldn’t be more perfect. <3
“Even the fragile wren, the smallest of birds, will fight against the owl when it threatens her young ones in the nest.” Shakespeare, Macbeth.
Missing their fur-babies at home, the group visited the Humane Society of Tampa Bay who were more than happy to welcome the animal lovers with their Break Time Buddies program. This amazing program allows local groups & businesses to schedule team building and stress relieving breaks for their staff where adoptable animals visit, bringing smiles to everyone.
While this visit was only with puppies, this is likely due to the lack of shyness many dogs exercise when meeting new people. Sometimes you just have to “fan girl”! (Meaning “overly excited when seeing a specific individual” for those of us out of our teens.)
Cats on the other paw, can take a bit of warming up to and like to keep THEIR fan groups to a minimum; they don’t “fan girl” for anyone. Shame as we had so many “Meownolith” cat puns ready for the tour groups!
The smiles of pure joy just couldn’t be contained on the humans faces.
Although the visit was short, it left everyone feeling a bit more relaxed and cheerful afterwards.
We’re sure the concert-goers were pleased with their already amazing concert made all the more perfect by stress-free musicians.
Fadi, Shadi and welcomed newcomer, Rodriguez have happily formed the sanctuaries black panther union.
What makes this union even more heartwarming, is that both Fadi and Rodriquez are blind in one eye. Fadi also suffers from very bad vision in her remaining eye.
Nothing will stop this graceful team, certainly not a lack of vision.
Fadi and Shadi have been at the sanctuary for a few months but bonded even more closely when little Rodriguez was rescued. A couple of days after his arrival on June 21st, the brave little kitten joined forces with the power duo, completing their purrfect trio.
The three ebony beauties are frequently seen lounging together around the location.
Fadi and Rodriguez successfully guard their nook, wisely situated to utilize the best views. Now that’s teamwork!
Rodriquez has even proven his steadfast and brave heart by approaching our favorite canine residents at the haven, Amira and Henry! This ameowzing dog duo are loving life together too.
We know the gorgeously striking triad are now under the best care possible with owner Alaa’s watchful eyes…or he is under theirs! Great way to start your day =)
Please follow Alaa and the lifesaving work he is doing for all animals in Syria!
Best friends aren’t often exactly alike. Many times what brings two souls together is the balance between their polar opposites.
Meet Baron, the German Shepard and his best bud, Alvin, a domestic tuxedo cat!
Baron’s mom originally wasn’t allowed a dog where she lived, but citing that cats “are the next best thing because I love animals”, she was happy to take Alvin home from the Humane Society nearby. Alvin was overjoyed when he was finally able to have a sibling, even if that brother quickly outgrew him.
The pair are quite characters even when flying solo.
When Baron began having health issues and experienced small seizures, Alvin was right there to comfort him with soothing grooming. As soon as the caring cat begins the repetitive licking, the trance-like effect can be seen on Baron’s face immediately.
Alvin took to calming Baron down and has not stopped since, even after medication has prevented more episodes. The two are frequently found napping together or just chilling out. Although there are other canines on the property, these buddies seems to gravitate towards each other automatically.
The 4-year-old pups owners started their own dog training business, Towse K9 Solutionsin Chandler, Arizona in 2011, so having numerous animals around isn’t uncommon.
Mom Eliza assures everyone they aren’t always lovey-dovey with each other, just as human siblings aren’t. But even though the duo may swat half-heartedly or pounce just out of reach, the ending is always the same; snuggles, grooming and a well deserved nap.
